HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PAIR OF SOCKS
![]() |
Socks are not to be forgotten. They are an important component of your outdoors wardrobe.
Basically socks provide cushioning, increases insulation and helps to wick moisture away from the skin and outwards. Damp skin loses its elasticity, tears easily, swells up and is prone to blistering so the flow of moisture is to be maintained by the socks.
These days socks are designed according to purpose like for walking, jogging, and light hiking etc.
Buying the right pair of socks can make a difference and relieve you of sore and itching feet .Here are a few tips on how to go about buying socks that give you comfort as well as enhance your style:
• Socks are available in a variety of materials like natural cotton, synthetic wool blends, wool, polyester and blends of two or more of these materials. Choose a material that suits your personal tastes.
• Choose a material that suits your body’s requirements.
• The thickness of the socks is another major factor to keep in mind. Thin and natural fiber socks are recommended for warm climates while thicker socks made form synthetic fibers work best in cooler conditions. Thicker socks also offer better cushioning to your feet.
• If you are staying in a cool climate you can also opt for socks made of polyester.
• Some people experience itching and abrasions with cotton socks. This is due to the perspiration that cotton absorbs, making it cling to the skin. Try switching to another material like Merino wool, which absorbs sweat better.
• Light colored socks show the dirt, dark-colored ones are more resistant so you have to rely on the smell to decide whether they need to be washed. Don’t ever wear dirty socks it may lead to infections.
• You can go for‘wicking’ socks. These are woven from a synthetic material that draws sweat away from your skin, providing greater comfort and less irritation.
• You can also opt for the ‘breathing’ socks, which is usually made from a natural material that allows air to pass through the material keeping your feet cooler.
• These days there are “Diabetic Socks” for people with circulation problems. These socks offer thicker cushioning for the feet and do not hold your calf too tightly. These are the best option for people suffering from diabetes.
You need to keep in all the above factors in mind while choosing socks for your self. As a rule of thumb they should be in coordination with the color of your pants.
