 Accessories form one of the most neglected parts of our wardrobe. Men tend to pay attention only to what they wear but fail to understand that accessories if picked correctly and worn properly can transform the way they look. For those who are unaware, accessories play a vital in spelling a style statement for you as they reflect not only your lifestyle but also your attitude.
In my last article I spoke extensively about informal accessories and how can you hunt for the right pieces. In this write-up I’ll be focusing on formal accessories and ways to wear them in a tasteful manner. These accessories are called formal because they are typically worn with a suit or at the very least with a dress shirt and a tie. Some common ones include:
Cufflinks
Cufflinks are becoming increasingly popular and every discerning man is seen to invest in a few pairs that match his corresponding French cuffed shirts. The only two types of shirts that will accommodate cufflinks are either the convertible ones, which are again a newcomer to the market or the French cuffed ones like I just said. Silver accenting shirts are best suited for younger men where as gold fit the best for older men. One more thing about these accessories is that they render a unique flair to your personality that sets you apart from the rest.
Tie Clips
Tie clips have once again made a recent comeback but seem to be here to stay for long now. Now wearing this depends a lot on your attitude and sense of style. Different men wear it in different ways. It can be worn low on the tie to secure it into place or at a higher position as well if you are planning to make a flashy or a bold statement.
Pocket Squares
Also called as the pocket puffs, these spell magic when worn with suits. For those unknown to this, these are silk squares that one folds and places into the breast pocket of a blazer or a suit jacket. These are beautiful pieces and are a perfect compliment to a well co-coordinated suit. Emerging trends also show a patterned pocket square being ruffled into a breast pocket while worn with a sport shirt and a pair of fashionable jeans.

We’re all victims of the marketing dollars that are spent to make us think we have to look like this or that from the images we see in the media and movies, just the same as women though some men are loathed to admit it. But there are several men out there that take in all those images and just get it wrong.
 Here’s what is hot right now:
Scarves- Time to pick up a great scarf, look for the comfortable Kashmir or cotton wool scarves in neutral tones. Gray has made a huge comeback as well and works with several colors. If you have one main coat, look for a scarf that will coordinate with it. Otherwise, feel free to get a little bold and daring if you want to show your wild side. Scarves should be about 60 to 70 inches in length. Make sure you avoid ones that are too long or too short.
Leather Accessories- A nice leather neck rope or bracelet is very popular right now. Combining leather with stainless steel is also quite hot and presents a nicely polished finish. For necklaces, go with a thinner style to avoid having it look like a dog collar. For bracelets, look for multi-strand leather bands that incorporate tribal or other interesting designs. Black is the most popular color, but you can mix it up with cream or brown to keep it interesting.
Stainless Steel Jewelry- These are incredibly popular this year. Look for a nice stainless steel cuff bracelet or a pendant that can be worn in several different ways. These are signature pieces that you can wear everyday and are even suitable for most workplaces.
Bold Pendants- Bold silver pendants are definitely hot items right now. Pair them with a nice chain or a leather cord for a polished look. Cross and spear pendants are particularly hot right now, but any bold shape that incorporates an interesting design will work as well.
Cuffs and Armbands- Bold cuff like bracelets and armbands are very big this year. Look for metals or if you are feeling really bold, go with a nice big leather cuff. Armbands are a bit smaller and should be worn on the upper arms. This is a great way to really define your upper arm muscles.
Hats- Trucker hats are dead and gone, but a simple ball cap is still very in, look for ripped edges and embroidered. Try to avoid a hat that is too flashy or strange and stick with neutral colors that will coordinate with just about everything.
Rings, bracelets, earrings, belts…whatever…is nice in moderation. Looking like a Christmas tree will turn most girls off. Accessories are meant to enhance your look and not loading yourself with diverse things.
